PTSD: What is PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)?

Many people who go through a traumatic event experience difficulty adjusting and coping with life for a time afterwards. But sometimes, these events can really shake up a persons’ life in a major way with the symptoms lasting for months or years. This severe anxiety disorder usually develops after any exposure to an event that causes psychological and or physical trauma. The sources of this trauma usually come from either experiencing or witnessing an event that is either real or perceived to be real life threatening to the person or someone else.

PTSD and Brain Function

The brain of the person suffering from PTSD produces very significant amounts of high beta waves (undesirable and associated with fear and anxiety) and very little amounts of alpha waves (necessary and associated with calm and relaxation). These alpha waves are also vital for the parasympathetic nervous system to function optimally. Through neurofeedback therapy, high beta waves are greatly reduced and alpha waves are increased throughout the brain. The result is a brain that learns to function effectively, a body that heals from the associated physical conditions/symptoms and learns to tackle stress appropriately, and a hopeful person who begins to experience tranquil, peaceful emotions that had long ago eluded him or her! With the qEEG or Brain Map as an assessment tool, we can see the electrical activity of the brain. We can then determine where and how the dysregulation occurs allowing us to develop treatment protocols to put the brain back into balance without medication.
