Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: What are these Disorders?

Many times it is very difficult to determine if a person has Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The reason for this difficulty and confusion is that the differences between these disorders are even difficult for most experts. What we do know from the National Fibromyalgia Association is that 70% of people who have one of these disorders also has the other.

The symptoms are usually initially treated individually until it seems to the person that they are physically and emotionally falling apart with a myriad of symptoms that do not appear to be related. Depending upon what type of doctor an individual goes to for treatment will also determine which diagnosis is given, further confusing the situation.

Do I have Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Brain Function:

With the qEEG or Brain Map as an assessment tool, we can see the electrical activity of the brain. We can then determine where and how the dysregulation occurs allowing us to develop treatment protocols to put the brain back into balance without medication.

It has been noted in people who have FM and CFS, that there are some differences in their brain activities and neurotransmitters than in someone without these disorders. These include (but are not limited to):

  • Stage 4 sleep disorder
  • Evidence of a genetic component
  • Serotonin levels are lower than normal
  • Hypothalmic pituitary suppression
  • Reduced levels of growth hormone
  • Blood flow reduction in the cerebral cortex
  • Neurotransmitter pain signals are increased
