At least 1 in 10 schoolchildren are affected by a learning disability. Telling a child with a learning disability to try harder, pay closer attention, or improve motivation on their own will not work. A learning disability, or learning disorder, is not a problem with intelligence. Learning disabilities are caused by a difference in the brain that affects how information is received, processed, or communicated. Children and adults with learning disabilities have trouble processing sensory information, because they see, hear, and understand things differently.

Dallas Brain Changers effectively works with both children and adults who struggle with a range of Learning Disabilities, including Dyslexia. Research clearly supports the same effective results that our clients consistently experience with neurofeedback treatment for a multitude of Learning Disabilities, including Dyslexia.

Dyslexia: What does it mean if my child has Dyslexia?

Below are two abstracts for research projects that demonstrate the effectiveness of neurofeedback for treatment of learning disability:

Neurofeedback for Elementary Students with Identified Learning Problems Peter C. Orlando, PhD, Richard O. Rivera, BS

Introduction. The goal of this research was to ascertain whether basic reading, reading comprehension, the reading composite, and IQ scores could be improved using neurofeedback. Pre-test and post-test reading and cognitive assessments were administered to sixth, seventh and eighth graders identified as having learning problems. Control and experimental groups were chosen at random. With the exception of three students, every student in the control and experimental group had previously been diagnosed with Specific Learning Disability or as Other Health Impaired according to State and Federal guidelines for special education services. The three students were medically diagnosed as having ADD (AD/HD) and were on a 504 Accommodation Plan.

Method. The research began in late August 2001 with securing administrative and parental permissions. Student participation began during the last week in September and lasted through the last week in April. A day was set aside to administer QEEGs (also called “brain maps”) to the students in the experimental group. Protocols were developed by following the brain maps and by using clinical judgment after staffing the students with their teachers on a regular basis; their psycho-educational evaluations were also used to plan the protocols. Following the statistics on the biofeedback machines also influenced protocol decisions. Neurofeedback training was provided to the participants of the experimental group only. Both the experimental group and the control group had their Individualized Educational Plans (IEP) or 504 Plans plus their general curriculum plans. Neurofeedback training lasted approximately 30 to 45 minutes within each one-hour time block. The sessions were conducted weekly for the seven-month period. Some students received more sessions than others because of absences, field trips, testing and other natural rhythms of home and school life. The average number of sessions per student was 28.

Results. Neurofeedback was more effective in improving reading tests than no neurofeedback training. There were significant interactions between neurofeedback and time on basic reading. Wilks’ lambda (?) = .69, F(1, 23) = 10.32, p < .01, on reading comprehension, ? = .75, F(1, 23) = 7.62, p = .01, and on reading composite scores, ? = .65, F(1, 23) = 12.59, p < .01.

Neurofeedback training was more effective in improving both the Verbal and Full Scale IQ scores than no neurofeedback training. There was a significant interaction between neurofeedback and time on Verbal IQ, ? = .62, F(1, 21) = 12.71, p < .01, and on Full Scale IQ, ? = .56, F(1, 21) = 16.50, p < .01. However, there was not a significant interaction between neurofeedback and time on Performance IQ, ? = .87, F(1, 21) = 3.00, p = .10.

Discussion. The results support the hypothesis that neurofeedback training is effective in improving reading quotients. Limitations of the study and ideas for further research are presented. Neurofeedback may be an effective supplement to special education in improving IQ and reading performance.

EEG and behavioral changes following neurofeedback treatment in learning disabled children.

Abstract

Neurofeedback (NFB) is an operant conditioning procedure, by which the subject learns to control his/her EEG activity. On one hand, Learning Disability (LD) children often have higher values of theta EEG absolute and relative power than normal children, and on the other hand, it has been shown that minimum alpha absolute power is necessary for adequate performance. Ten LD children were selected with higher than normal ratios of theta to alpha absolute power (theta/alpha). The Test Of Variables of Attention (TOVA) was applied. Children were divided into two groups in order to maintain similar IQ values, TOVA values, socioeconomical status, and gender for each group. In the experimental group, NFB was applied in the region with highest ratio, triggering a sound each time the ratio fell below a threshold value. Noncontingent reinforcement was given to the other group. Twenty half-hour sessions were applied, at a rate of 2 per week. At the end of the 20 sessions, TOVA, WISC and EEG were obtained. There was significant improvement in WISC performance in the experimental group that was not observed in the control group. EEG absolute power decreased in delta, theta, alpha and beta bands in the experimental group. Control children only showed a decrease in relative power in the delta band. All changes observed in the experimental group and not observed in the control group indicate better cognitive performance and the presence of greater EEG maturation in the experimental group, which suggests that changes were due not only to development but also to NFB treatment.

Nutrition Counseling: Are we “really” what we eat?

The problem that most people seem to overlook is that the answer to that question is not a simple yes or no. Although we are not literally ‘what’ we eat, what we eat determines how much energy we have. And energy is vital for life!

Energy

Our bodies are made up of cells; arguably, these cells are essentially the smallest form of life. Cells have a world of their own, a world in which they breath (intake oxygen and expel carbon dioxide), potentially reproduce/divide , and function towards the specific task that their genetic makeup was made to do. These cells have different organelles that do different functions within the cell and are all interconnected. One specific organelle by the name of the Mitochondria is responsible for the production and harvesting of energy. Energy in the world of biology is translated into adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Essentially, ATP is a molecule that will give off energy when broken, and by the same logic, it takes energy to build. Essentially what the mitochondria does is take energy existent in other molecules (for example, glucose) and switches that to ATP which is a currency that is then used throughout all the cells of the body.

The food we eat provides molecules in which energy is stored, and our cells need this to function and live. The simpler these molecules are, the less energy has to be spent by the mitochondria to harvest the energy from those compounds. On the other hand, if we are eating foods that take more energy to breakdown than they actually produce, this means we are ending up with a deficit in the energy (ATP). Also, usually the foods that end up using more energy than they provide are the same ones that cause toxemia. Low energy is the result of toxic saturation of the bloodstream and tissues at the cellular level.

“The evidence suggests strongly that a dietary pattern that contains excessive intake of foods high in calories, saturated fat, cholesterol, (animal products) and sodium (salt) — but that is low in complex carbohydrates and fiber (fruit and vegetables), is one that contributes significantly to the high rates of major chronic diseases among Americans” (The Surgeon General’s Report on Nutrition and Health, 1988)

In the following weeks, we will be publishing articles on different food groups, exercises, and overall lifetime routines that will help manage and decrease everyday stress, anxiety, and pain while increasing energy, overall gratification, happiness and peace.

Holistic Medicine: Nutrition Counseling

As an effective Holistic Medicine provider, Dallas Brain Changers offers Nutrition Counseling as a part of its integrated approach to natural health and wellness. These sessions focus on the nutritional and dietary needs of the client. The stress of daily life takes a toll on our bodies by depleting our energy reserves. It is only by sustaining a naturally healthy diet and an active lifestyle that we may reverse this everyday damage that is done.

Why is Proper Nutrition Important?

Nutrition is an essential part of everyone’s daily life. To neglect it is to undermine and invite every aspect of disease into our lives. It cannot be stressed how big of a role nutrition plays in the quest for healthy lives. Nutrition Counseling can help combat the effects that improper nutrition have on our sleep, energy levels, concentration, memory, focus and attention (AD/HD symptoms), anxiety, depression, moods and overall health.

Holistic Medicine is the natural science of health restoration and its preservation. It corrects many health disorders and body systems. The following are some of the systems that are directly effected: digestive, bronchial, internal, heart, and skin. Hygienic weight loss, increase of energy, and body toning are just some of the benefits that are seen when a correct diet is followed.

What is the Nutrition Counseling Process with Dallas Brain Changers?

The initial Nutrition Counseling session includes a full hour of assessment in which the counselor will go through the pressing issues that are affecting the client. Also, a hair analysis is done in order to get a better idea of what vitamins and/or minerals are either missing from the diet or not being properly absorbed by the body. There is then be a follow-up session to review an individualized plan based upon client goals, symptoms, and hair analysis. The practitioner then maintains regular contact with the client to assess and/or change the plan as they progress to an improved, healthier lifestyle.

Holistic Medicine encompasses all practices that are an integrated part of pursuing ultimate health and well-being without medication. At Dallas Brain Changers, we tailor a plan for each client that is non-invasive and may include Biofeedback, Neurofeedback, Christian Counseling and Holistic Natural Health and Nutrition Counseling in order to assist the client in the goal of achieving optimum health and healing.

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Bipolar: Is Bipolar Difficult to Treat?

Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones is Bipolar. She recently told her fans that she had decided to check herself into a mental health facility for 30 days to receive ongoing treatment for this disorder.

Zeta-Jones first received in-patient treatment in 2011, not long after her husband, actor Michael Douglas, was diagnosed with throat cancer. According to statements by the actress and her publicist, her bipolar disorder is controlled by medication, but she is very committed to ongoing maintenance.

It is outstanding that Zeta-Jones is so diligent in monitoring her health, and even more outstanding that she is so open about it. But is it typical for someone with bipolar being treated with medication, to require 30 days of in-patient treatment to keep the symptoms at bay?

Is It Bipolar or Depression?

Relapse is not uncommon among people with bipolar disorder. There are two main types of bipolar disorder – bipolar I and bipolar II. Bipolar I is the more severe of the two; it involves significant mood swings, both “highs” and “lows.” Bipolar II, with which Zeta-Jones has been diagnosed, involves more lows than highs. It can often be misdiagnosed as depression.

Bipolar 1 vs Bipolar II

Those with bipolar II can experience periods of depression, feelings of emptiness and worry, and even thoughts of suicide. Those with bipolar II are more likely to relapse than those with bipolar I – whether they are on medication or not.

What Causes Bipolar Disorder to Flare Up?

Every patient is different. Stress seems to be a significant trigger. This may have been a factor in 2011, when Zeta-Jones was first admitted to a treatment facility.

Additionally, varying schedules and sleep patterns can also lead to a relapse. Doctors generally recommend that bipolar patients avoid stress, maintain a regular sleep schedule, avoid working the night shift or swing shift, exercise regularly, and cultivate supportive relationships. Stressful life situations, such as a job loss, can trigger flare-ups of this disorder.

Therapy is also beneficial to preventing relapse. According to the Archives of General Psychiatry, the relapse rate among those participating in family therapy was 35% in a two-year period, as compared with a 54% relapse rate among those not participating in family therapy. Sessions with a therapist can also be helpful in identifying triggers to bipolar episodes and in figuring out ways to avoid those triggers.

It is worth noting, though, that even WITH therapy, the relapse rate among those with bipolar disorder is still 35%. Thus, the reason why even those like Zeta-Jones, who are diligent in their health care, seek ongoing treatment for flare-ups.

What Else Can Help Prevent Bipolar Flare-ups?

Anyone suffering from a bipolar flare-up, as in the case of Zeta-Jones, is wise to seek treatment. Dallas Brain Changers offers a unique combination of services to help reduce the symptoms of Bipolar Disorder. We offer Christian counseling, which can address triggers and some of the underlying emotional causes of flare-ups, leading to more understanding and control. Neurofeedback works on the abnormally functioning brainwaves that cause the symptoms of bipolar disorder – and re-trains those brainwaves to behave more normally, reducing the symptoms without relying on the medications that may not work very well anyway! Finally, we have Nutritional counseling services to help you learn what to eat and not to eat and hopefully alleviate your bipolar symptoms through diet, in addition to eating in a way more beneficial to overall health.

Anxiety and Nutrition – Part 2: Are There Foods I Can Eat to Help My Anxiety?

In an earlier article, we covered foods to avoid if you have been diagnosed with anxiety. While anxiety is not caused by foods we eat or do not eat, symptoms can be influenced by good and bad nutrition.

Anxiety and Nutrition – Part 1: Can I Help My Anxiety by Avoiding Certain Foods?

Eating healthful foods contributes to proper hormonal and brain functioning, which leads to feelings of well-being. So, if you have been diagnosed with anxiety, what foods should you eat?

Drink Water. This seems obvious, but so many of us go through life dehydrated because we do not drink enough water. About 60% of the human body is made up of water, so it is vital that we replenish our water regularly. Dehydration can lead to anxiety, so it is vital that you drink enough water each day. How much is enough? Divide your body weight in half, and drink that number of ounces of water each day. A 150-pound person should drink 75 ounces of water daily. That means water, not sugary beverages or alcohol, which can lead to increased symptoms of anxiety.

Fruit. Some people avoid fruit because it’s “sugar.” But your body needs carbs and sugar, just not the refined sugars found in cakes and cookies. The sugar in fruit can be converted to energy. Blueberries and peaches are especially beneficial in terms of nutrients.

Vegetables. Mom was right when she told you to eat your vegetables. Foods rich in B vitamins have been associated with boosting mood and staving off both depression and anxiety. These foods include cauliflower, mustard greens, spinach, asparagus, red and green peppers, and beans/soybeans.

Foods That Include Tryptophan. You may have heard of tryptophan as the substance in turkey that makes people sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner. The fact is, tryptophan is a natural relaxation agent that also helps reduce anxiety. Besides poultry, tryptophan is found in oats, soy, and sesame seeds.

Magnesium. There is a theory that a magnesium deficiency plays a role in anxiety. Few people get much of this important nutrient, which plays a part in more than 300 bodily functions. Foods rich in magnesium include broccoli, kidney beans, spinach, tofu, almonds, brown rice, and soybeans.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Research is still in progress, but there is some evidence that Omega-3 is helpful in ameliorating anxiety. It is also helpful to those with high cholesterol. Omega-3s can be found in fish, flaxseed, some nuts, and some forms of winter squash. Supplements are also readily available.

How Can Dallas Brain Changers Help?

Of course, anxiety cannot be cured by diet alone. Good nutrition can, however, help with the severity of symptoms.
Anxiety and Nutrition – Part 1: Can I Help My Anxiety by Avoiding Certain Foods?

There is definitely a link between anxiety and nutrition! Anxiety is certainly not caused by poor nutrition, but new studies indicate that some of the symptoms may be alleviated, at least to an extent, through good nutrition and by avoiding certain foods.

Common symptoms of anxiety include excessive and persistent worry, racing thoughts, trouble concentrating, and a general feeling of uneasiness and fear. Good nutrition can help calm some of these symptoms. Just telling someone to “eat healthy” isn’t enough; healthy eating can mean different things to different people. But studies and observation have shown that removing certain types of foods from the anxious person’s diet can help ameliorate some of their symptoms.

Here is a list of some items to avoid in relation to Anxiety and Nutrition:

Caffeine. The thought of giving up the morning coffee may be unthinkable to some people. But coffee is known to increase anxiety, especially if drunk in excess. One study indicated that caffeine intake of more than 300mg greatly increased tension and anxiety – and a Grande-size cup at Starbucks has around 330mg. Caffeine can also increase the heart rate and cause other physical symptoms that could lead to panic attacks.

Alcohol. Initially, it may seem that a drink calms you down. But drinking alcohol also leads to dehydration, hormone imbalances, and even physical symptoms that can trigger anxiety attacks. Not to mention that excess drinking can remove inhibitions and cause you to do things you might not normally do – and the aftereffects of alcohol-induced poor choices can certainly add to anxiety in general.

Nicotine. Okay, it’s not a food. But ingesting nicotine, a stimulant, can have effects similar to caffeine. It constricts the blood vessels and makes your heart work harder to pump blood through your body. In general, smokers tend to be more anxious than non-smokers, and they are more prone to poor sleep patterns.

Refined Sugar. This is the sugar in desserts and sweet beverages, not necessarily the natural sugars found in fruit. Sugar can stimulate the body just as caffeine does; it can cause the jitters and a heightened rate of overall anxiety. Later, when you experience the sugar “crash” as the blood sugar in your blood drops, you can become weak, irritable, lightheaded, unable to make decisions – and more anxious.

Artificial Sweeteners. These are chemicals that reduce the level of serotonin in the brain. This can result in stress, anxiety, and depression.

Added Hormones in Meat. In the U.S. today, many animals raised for food have been fed hormones to stimulate rapid weight gain and growth. When we eat this meat, we eat the hormones, which can cause an imbalance in our own systems and promote depression and anxiety. One hormone has also been thought to play a role in the development of certain forms of cancer. Instead, choose organically raised meat and fish products.

Food and Depression: You are What You Eat!

MSG (monosodium glutamate). We normally think of MSG as an ingredient in Chinese food, but that’s not the only place it is used. Consuming MSG can cause tingling, headaches, and numbness, which certainly would impact the anxious person negatively.

Salt. Besides impacting the heart and arteries and promoting arteriolosclerosis by raising the blood pressure, salt also robs the body of potassium; the nervous system needs potassium to function at its best. Try not to exceed one gram of salt per day.

Fried foods. These foods are usually poor in nutrition and are challenging to digest, not to mention having a negative impact on the heart. It is difficult to reduce anxiety if your body is struggling to process foods such as fried or fast foods, rather than gaining good nutrition from whole foods prepared in a more healthful way.

Dairy Products. In and of themselves, these are not necessarily bad for you. If you consume too much dairy, however, your adrenaline may increase, which leads to a greater state of anxiety. Many people are also lactose intolerant, so eating certain types of dairy can lead to gastrointestinal distress, which is certainly anxiety-producing.

In general, what you have heard about anxiety and nutrition is correct: avoid processed foods, salt, sugar, and chemicals.

If I Have Been Diagnosed with Anxiety, What SHOULD I Eat?

This will be covered in Anxiety and Nutrition – Part 2! Of course, anxiety cannot be cured by diet alone.
Exciting Progress on the Insurance Front: Is Neurofeedback Covered by Insurance

It has long been established that neurofeedback is an effective and permanent treatment without medication for many disorders. There are many research studies to support this fact. Additionally, insurance companies provide a CPT code for neurofeedback; in spite of this, there is an ongoing problem with insurance company refusal to reimburse for neurofeedback therapy.

ISNR and the Battle for Insurance Reimbursement:

Beginning in 2012, ISNR became involved in discussions with United Health Care on insurance reimbursement for neurofeedback. In a related effort, the ISNR Board of Directors commissioned Ed Pigott, PhD to author a white paper on a comprehensive meta-analysis comparing the effectiveness of neurofeedback to behavior therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, and stimulant medication for treatment of ADHD.

This white paper was created to fulfill several needs, the first being for a thorough documentation of neurofeedback efficacy that was presented to United Health Care during the insurance reimbursement meetings. Another need was for a comprehensive document that neurofeedback practitioners could access for insurance appeals and insurance parity requests on behalf of their clients. This paper also provides a current reference list of neurofeedback studies for ADHD, and it addresses issues related to appropriate research designs for learning-based treatments such as neurofeedback.

For access to the site, white paper, and insurance letter kit click: ISNR White Paper Insurance Reimbursement . You may print and send this to your provider to encourage coverage for neurofeedback or to assist in reimbursement for already paid services.

ADHD and Diet: Nutritional Assessment for help with ADHD Symptoms

When brain function is out of balance, it is common to experience the symptoms of ADHD. Genetics are also a likely culprit, but the person’s environment, including the food they eat, may also play a role in aggravating symptoms.

There is a direct link between ADHD and diet. This is not to suggest that poor nutrition causes ADHD; however, many of the symptoms may be alleviated in part by following good nutritional guidelines. For example, it seems clear that eating certain foods – and avoiding others – can aid with concentration and motivation, quiet feelings of restlessness or impulsivity, and temper emotional reactions.

No two people with ADHD symptoms have the exact same brain function issues; neither do they have the exact same body chemistry. A Nutritional Assessment by a qualified practitioner can be very beneficial to help you understand which foods and food combinations are best to alleviate your specific symptoms.

Can Diet affect Brain Function?

The ADHD Brain and Insulin

The stability of the brain is contingent upon the stability of the body’s insulin level. Sugars, and foods that are turned to sugar, cause a surge of energy, and then a “sugar crash.” At some level, everyone has probably experienced this. During the surge period, the person with ADHD can become particularly hyperactive, restless, and emotional. When the crash occurs, this person may experience an increased inability to focus, a reduced ability to follow through, and an increase in irritability. This is another reason that ADHD and diet are important considerations

A Nutritional Assessment can help you determine how these foods are affecting your body and symptoms. A general rule of thumb is to avoid sugary foods and those foods that are easily turned to sugar when metabolized: products made with white flour, white rice, or white potatoes fall into this category.

In general, those with ADHD (and frankly, most of the rest of us) should avoid simple carbohydrates, such as sugar, corn syrup, honey, white flour, white rice, and skinless potatoes.

What About Additives and ADHD?

It is always better to stick with foods in their natural state, especially when talking about ADHD and diet. The American Academy of Pediatrics has stated, based on studies, that it is reasonable to remove certain additives and food colorings from the diets of individuals with ADHD. These include artificial colors, especially red and yellow, MSG, aspartame sweeteners (NutraSweet, Equal), and certain preservatives.

If I Have ADHD, What Should I Eat Instead?

Complex carbohydrates such as vegetables, whole grains, and some fruits are extremely beneficial for ADHD symptoms; eating these early in the day can provide sustained energy, and toward the end of the day, they can also help avoid insomnia.

Brain Fuel: Carbohydrates and the Brain

Also, to influence ADHD and diet, try adding a balanced amount of protein throughout the day. This includes beans and nuts, with some lean meats and eggs, as well. Including these items in meals and for snacks can help you avoid crashes and maintain concentration. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in tuna, salmon, some nuts, and olive and canola oil can also be beneficial.

In general, try to look for whole foods, or natural foods; in other words, eat foods that are still in their purest possible form as they come from nature, without processing by artificial means. Nuts are a good, filling, handy, natural snack.

Water is always the best thing to drink. Drinking water throughout the day keeps your body and brain hydrated, and it has a sustaining effect on energy. Avoid sugary beverages; they produce the same result as sugary foods, only faster.

How Can Dallas Brain Changers Help?

ECT: ECT or Neurofeedback? Which is safer?

ECT and Neurofeedback are two VERY different forms of therapy! Neurofeedback has been practiced therapeutically since the 1960s, but it is highly unlikely that the average person had heard of it until within the last five to 10 years. Because it is still fairly unfamiliar to the general public, there is a misconception that neurofeedback is the same thing as, or very similar to, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). However, this is not the case.

What is Electroconvulsive Therapy?

Most people have heard of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), also known as electric shock therapy. If nothing else, popular culture has provided us with images of ECT in the form of Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, or more recently, Russell Crowe’s character, John Nash, in A Beautiful Mind. The idea of electric shock therapy is very frightening to many laypeople – and for good reason! ECT involves the introduction of between 70 and 150 volts of electrical current directly into the brain in order to induce a grand mal seizure! That just sounds scary.

Neurofeedback, on the other hand, introduces NO electricity into the brain. Yes, it involves the placement of electrodes or sensors on the scalp, and the word “electrodes” can also be a scary word to someone visualizing electric shock therapy. However, the only current in neurofeedback comes from the brain itself. Neurofeedback does not introduce anything into the patient’s brain; instead, the patient’s own brainwaves are “fed back” to the brain itself so the brain can learn to behave more normally. The only electricity being used is that which runs the computer equipment to measure the results.

What is Electroconvulsive Therapy Used For?

ECT is more of a last-resort therapy, used in people who are severely manic, depressed, or schizophrenic, in a situation where there isn’t time to see if medication will work – in suicidal patients, for example. It may be used when numerous medication therapies have failed to have a desired effect. It can also be used in patients who are catatonic or suffering from severe dementia.

Neurofeedback, on the other hand, is safe, and it is more of a first-line response. Because it is non-invasive and simple for the patient (you watch a movie while the neurofeedback is going on) – it makes sense to try neurofeedback soon after diagnosis, rather than trying medications that can have unpleasant and lasting side effects. Neurofeedback can be used to treat anything from anxiety and depression to insomnia, migraines, and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) (see a more comprehensive list here). Not only can neurofeedback fix some of the problems originating in the brain – but it can actually make you smarter!

What Are the Side Effects of Neurofeedback as Opposed to the Side Effects of Electroconvulsive Therapy?

Neurofeedback rarely has any side effects at all, and the lasting effects are all positive and permanent!

ECT, however, has a wide range of potential side effects. Even medical experts don’t agree on the severity of the risks associated with electroconvulsive therapy. Some mental health professionals claim ECT has an 85% to 90% success rate with relatively minor amounts of side effects such as memory loss. Others want to see electroconvulsive therapy banned altogether and cite stories of extensive memory loss and brain damage.

ECT is known to have caused the following side effects:

*Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a very serious result of ECT. When we run a qEEG on someone who has had ECT, the Traumatic Brain Injury Discriminate always shows a moderate to severe brain injury! Clients come to us for neurofeedback therapy to try to minimize the ongoing symptoms of the TBI caused by ECT. These clients suffer from many issues, including chronic Insomnia, short-term memory loss, and other physical and emotional symptoms caused by Electroconvulsive Therapy.

Some of the other issues related to ECT, such as cardiovascular problems and stroke, have been known to cause death. While it is true that physical injuries are less common in electroconvulsive therapy nowadays than they were in the Cuckoo’s Nest days, because of the use of general anesthesia, it is also true that, because of the anesthesia, a greater amount of electricity is needed to achieve the same effect. Studies have also shown that up to 64% of people receiving ECT treatment relapse within six months.

ADHD: Does My Child Really Have It or Was ADHD Misdiagnosed? Pt 3 of 3

What are other Dangers of Medication for Misdiagnosed ADHD?

A very typical treatment of ADHD involves use of medications such as Ritalin and other stimulants. A common side effect of these is insomnia—and if a child is experiencing undiagnosed sleep issues already, these drugs only exacerbate them! Now that new medical guidelines allow physicians to prescribe ADHD meds to preschoolers, sleep and even eating habits can be disrupted even earlier.

ADHD: Does My Child Really Have It or Was ADHD Misdiagnosed? Pt 1 of 3

According to USA Today, after being on ADHD medication for three years, the dosage is dialed up by an average of 41% because the body builds a tolerance to the positive effects. So if a child is diagnosed, or misdiagnosed, with ADHD at age 5, he or she may be on twice as much medication by age 11. And do these medications work? USA Today and The New York Times report that after three years on medications, a child’s academic performance is exactly where it would have been if they had never taken the drugs in the first place.

ADHD: Does My Child Really Have It or Was ADHD Misdiagnosed? Pt 2 of 3

Consider this: After three years on ADHD medications, the medicated child is an average of .79 inches shorter and six pounds lighter than children of the same age who never took those drugs. Lack of physical growth is a very real side effect of these medications!
