On Monday, August 13, 2012, USA Today published the story on Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. being treated at the Mayo Clinic for Bipolar Disorder. This disorder affects 7-10 million Americans, and it is separated into two categories, Bipolar I and Bipolar II, based on criteria found in the DSM IV.
Do I have Bipolar Disorder?
In a statement released by the Mayo Clinic regarding Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr, the Illinois Democrat has been diagnosed with Bipolar II, after extensive evaluation.
The statement added, “Many Americans have Bipolar Disorder. It is a treatable disorder that affects parts of the brain that control emotion, thought, and motivation.”
So How Did Mayo Clinic determine Jesse Jackson has Bipolar II?
Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. has been on medical leave since June 10, and recently his office announced he was being treated for depression and gastrointestinal issues. Severe depression is one side of the Bipolar Disorder coin. The other side is Mania. The main difference between Bipolar I and Bipolar II is the severity of mania. Bipolar I is identified by full-blown mania, whereas hypomania is characteristic of Bipolar II.
